This is a side-by-side comparison of 2 Nephi 27 and Isaiah 29.
These chapters are slightly different from other Isaiah quotes. Instead of quoting Isaiah directly, Nephi is writing his own sermon which quotes Isaiah heavily, and in many instances verbatim. But he also injects his own words and sometimes it is hard to know when Nephi stops and when Isaiah begins.
The first few verses of Isaiah 29 are not quoted in 2 Nephi 27 but they appear to form the basis of the last few verses of 2 Nephi 26, which is the first part of the sermon that continues for the next few chapters. I won't mark up the verses where there is no overlap.

Another explanation for the differences, rather than 'Nephi is writing his own sermon which quotes Isaiah heavily' might be that the version of Isaiah that Nephi had actually included the extra words, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteThis is a good point. The fact that this text shows up in JST Isaiah 29 certainly makes me think that this could've possibly been in the original text.
DeleteHowever, I think it's more likely that Nephi was almost midrashically weaving these Isaiah verses into his own latter-day prophecy since the way he writes doesn't really match Isaiah's style. Right after finishing quoting Isaiah almost verbatim he still has some residual Isaiah-isms by using heavy styles of repetition.
Interestingly, the three major insertions made by Nephi in v. 27, 28, 31 are all to emphasize that the LORD knows, sees, and will show unto wicked and "the terrible one" their being cut off from Him. I think that Nephi may have inserted these himself to better organize and present the Isaiah text for his own purposes.
Also, verses 3 and 4 of 2 Nephi 27 demonstrate a similar more explicit recontextualization (in my mind) of original the Isaiah text by Nephi. He changes Ariel (code for "Jerusalem") to Zion, and adds in verse 4 how he is talking about the wicked in general, not just the immediate enemy nations of ancient Israel. In other words, this particular prophecy made by Isaiah can be a broader parallel of what will happen with the Book of Mormon in the latter days.
